The start of Spring is celebrated in many faiths around the world. It celebrates the new life that Spring brings and farewell to the cold winter. Nature blooms into action and new life appears in all forms.
Easter is the Christian celebration of the Resurrection of Christ on the third day after his Crucifixion. Unlike Christmas, each year Easter falls on a different date. This is because in the Bible it is written that Jesus' death and resurrection occurred around Passover - the Jewish holiday that remembers hoe God sent ten plagues to Egypt to compel the Pharoah to release his slaves. This lead to Christians celebrating at different times, so in 325AD the first council of Nicea (council of Christian Bishops in the city of Nicea) decided to establish the date for Easter independent of the Jewish calendar. It was decided that Easter Sunday should fall on the first Sunday after the first full moon that occurs on or after March 21st - the Vernal Equinox. If the full moon falls on a Sunday then the Easter Sunday will be celebrated a week later.
This year we are all across the globe dealing with a pandemic, COVID-19. This highly infectious disease has contributed to thousands (125123 as of 14th April 2020) of deaths and as such many governments have taken necessary steps to combat it. This means we in the UK, and many other countrie,s are in "Lockdown". EVERYONE must stay at home to help stop the spread of the virus. We can only venture out for limited reasons:
Shopping for basic necessities as infrequently as possible.
One form of exercise per day; running, walking, cycling - alone or with members of your household.
Medical needs, including escaping harm, providing care, collecting medication.
Travelling for work purposes, but only where this cannot be done from home. Everyone should aim to work from home if it is at all possible.
These reasons are exceptions and should be minimised as much as possible. When outside your home you should ensure you are at least 2 metres apart from anyone outside of your household.
So what can we do in these dark times? Eat cake of course 😁 This cake is a Prosecco delight topped with Prosecco Truffle Mini Eggs.
I hope you have all had a lovely Easter at home and are keeping safe and well. If you know anyone who lives alone, give them a call and check they are well and not too lonely. Kindness is FREE!
